Since iodine is difficult to get in the normal diet I supplement with Kelp powder. It is cheap, lasts a long time and I don't notice any taste when I throw it in my smoothies every morning. Added bonus: kelp is also rich in other minerals but low in sodium.
Another way to get iodine through your diet are eating fish regularly (especially fresh ocean fish...hard to do in Manitoba).
Why is iodine important? Iodine is important for proper thyroid function. If you are struggling to lose weight and are tired, abnormal thyroid function might be the culprit. Iodine deficiency can lead to gioter (enlarged thyroid). Low iodine levels are also associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.
If you are taking a multi-vitamin, check and see if it contains 150mcg/day. That might be enough although more is needed for pregnant or lactating women.
An extra little bonus with Kelp...it helps us to eliminate lead from the body.

I buy my kelp powder here. I haven't found it cheaper anywhere else.
