The cost for the 2014 season with Fenez Follies was $400. That works out to a little over $30 per week (12 boxes of produce).
Today was Open Farm Day. We visited a nice little family farm called Fenez Follies Farm just east of La Salle. The farm world is a little foreign to Ashton...and frankly to me as well..so we thought it would be neat to see something we don't see everyday. Ashton loved seeing the chickens in their little "house". Seeing the chickens actually brought me back to when I was about 6 years old and the happy memories of my grandpa and his farm. He had a farm kind of like this one. I have a memory of him putting a chicken on his head and it just sat there and pecked at his hat. We saw a couple adorably gross pigs that came close to us to give us a sniff. We also saw a couple cows and a mom and baby goat (unsure of correct terminology...so we'll just call them mom and baby). The baby goat was super friendly. They had kept her in their house over the winter with them because she was too young to be out in such cold weather. The goat was a bit too playful with the kids, trying to ram Ashton in the belly with its head. I don't think it hurt her but did scare her. The cows kept a close watch on us. It was a bit of an obstacle course dodging all the sh** piles. I like this farm because they use sustainable natural practices. They treat their animals well and they don't use any pesticide, herbicide or fungicide on the food they grow. Which has become super important to me as I educate myself on that subject. Fenez Follies is a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm. You pay upfront before the growing season starts. In return, you receive shares in the farm’s bounty, in the form of a weekly box of produce. Paying up front means you also share the risks due to weather and other factors beyond the control of the farmer. Instead of joining a CSA this year we did a lot of shopping at farmer's markets. I am intrigued by the idea of a CSA though. It would be nice to be surprised each week with a new box of produce. With Fenez Follies you get such a variety of produce, it would be fun to get creative with how to prepare or cook all of it.
